Housing

If the hutch is outside, ensure that it is well ventilated and sheltered from direct sunlight. Because guinea pigs can't jump or climb very high, make sure all areas of the hutch are easily accessible.

It is essential to provide rats and mice with a cage that is durable and has ample ventilation. There are a wide variety of cages for rats and mice, and selecting one can be overwhelming. To ensure your new friends have enough space to exercise, choose the largest cage you can accommodate.

Hutches or cages should be cleaned 2-3 times a week, depending on how many animals live in them. When cleaning, use a pet-safe disinfectant and replace any bedding.

 

Bedding

Straw, hay and wood shavings make ideal bedding for all small animals. Straw and hay are suitable for rabbits and guinea pigs, however it is too sharp for rats and mice. Wood shavings are a better alternative for mice and rats. Sometimes, your small animal might eat some of their bedding meaning it will need regular replenishing. For your pet rabbit, make a nest out of their straw or hay for them to sleep in. Whether you use straw, hay or wood shavings, it will need to be fully replaced once a week to keep odour to a minimum and maintain a clean environment for your pet.

 

Flea, Mite and Worm Treatments

Rabbits, guinea pigs, rats and mice can all become infected with worms so should be treated with an appropriate worming product as often as the product directs (usually once a month or once every three months). They can also get fleas so should be checked over regularly. Fleas and mites can infest their bedding but both the animal and their environment can be treated with flea and mite spray to remove any pests. If your pet has a severe infection or reaction to fleas or mites, it is best to visit their vet before commencing treatment.
