Advocate

Brand Overview

Advocate is a monthly topical treatment combining imidacloprid (for flea control) and moxidectin (for heartworm and intestinal worm prevention). Its broad spectrum covers fleas, heartworm, hookworms, roundworms, whipworms, and ear mites. Applied once a month, Advocate provides continuous protection by killing existing parasites and preventing new infestations. Suitable for dogs from 7 weeks of age (weighing at least 1 kg), Advocate is an efficient, vet-recommended solution for multi-parasite control.

Key Benefits

Comprehensive protection: Kills adult fleas, prevents heartworm disease, and controls intestinal worms (roundworms, hookworms, whipworms). Ear mite treatment: Effective against Otodectes cynotis infestations. Monthly convenience: Single application covers multiple parasites, reducing the need for separate treatments. Water-resistant: Efficacy remains intact even after swimming or bathing (wait 48 hours post-application).

Usage & Dosage

Choose the correct Advocate pipette based on body weight:

  • Small Dogs (1 – 4 kg): One 0.4 mL pipette monthly.
  • Medium Dogs (4 – 10 kg): One 1.0 mL pipette monthly.
  • Large Dogs (10 – 25 kg): One 2.5 mL pipette monthly.
  • Extra Large Dogs (25 – 40 kg): One 4.0 mL pipette monthly.
Apply directly to the skin at one or two points along the dorsal midline (between the shoulder blades). Do not bathe or swim the dog for 48 hours following application. Mark each application date to avoid missing a dose. If an application is late by more than one week, perform a heartworm test before reinitiating Advocate as per veterinary guidance.

Safety & Considerations

Advocate is generally well tolerated; occasional mild local itching or skin irritation may occur. Do not apply more frequently than once every 30 days. Avoid contact with eyes and mouth. Do not use on puppies under 7 weeks or dogs under 1 kg. Remove any applied product residue by washing hands after application. In case of accidental ingestion, contact your veterinarian immediately. Consult your vet if your dog is sick, underweight, or on other medications. Avoid wetting the application site until fully dried to ensure maximum absorption.

Frequently asked questions

Can I bathe my dog right after applying Advocate?
No—wait at least 48 hours post-application to allow proper absorption and ensure efficacy against parasites.
How soon does Advocate begin working?
Advocate kills fleas within 24 hours and begins preventing heartworm and intestinal worm development immediately after application.
Is Advocate safe for pregnant or nursing dogs?
Use only under veterinary supervision. Pregnancy and lactation can alter drug distribution—seek professional guidance before use.
Can I use Advantage and Advocate together?
No—both products contain imidacloprid. Using both simultaneously could increase risk of side effects. Use one product at a time.
Do I need a separate heartworm test each year?
Yes—annual heartworm testing is recommended before starting a new year of prevention to ensure your dog remains negative.
