Plush toys mimic the comforting feel of a companion and often contain squeakers to engage a dog's hunting instincts. They provide emotional comfort, especially to puppies and dogs that enjoy carrying a soft object during rest. Plush toys can also serve as a tool for gentle play, fostering bonding between you and your dog.
Look for double‐stitched seams and reinforced edges to prevent ripping. Opt for toys made from high‐quality, non‐toxic materials and safe stuffing. Some plush toys feature an outer layer of ballistic nylon or reinforced fabric in high‐stress areas to withstand moderate chewing. For dogs prone to tearing, choose smaller, simpler designs without excessive attachments like ribbons or loose eyes that could become choking hazards.
Use plush toys for gentle tug‐of‐war games or hide‐and‐seek—hide the plush toy around the house and encourage your dog to find it using their sense of smell. Squeaky plush toys can motivate dogs to chase and pounce, satisfying their natural prey drive. Rotate plush toys regularly to maintain novelty, and consider stuffing them with treats or a food puzzle insert for additional mental stimulation.
Inspect plush toys after each play session for loose threads, exposed stuffing, or broken squeakers. Remove damaged toys promptly to prevent ingestion of small parts. Wash machine‐safe plush toys on a gentle cycle with mild detergent, and air‐dry or tumble‐dry on low heat. For non‐washer‐friendly toys, surface‐clean with a damp cloth and mild soap, ensuring complete drying to avoid mould growth.
