Capstar

Product Overview

Capstar contains nitenpyram, a fast-acting oral flea adulticide that kills > 90 percent of adult fleas within 4 hours. As a single-dose tablet, Capstar provides rapid relief from flea infestations, reducing itching and flea bites. Ideal for dogs from 4 weeks of age (weighing at least 1 kg), Capstar begins working within 30 minutes of administration. However, Capstar's effect lasts only 24 hours—making it suitable for acute infestations or as part of an integrated flea management plan.

Key Benefits

Rapid flea kill: Begins killing adult fleas within 30 minutes, with > 90 percent killed within 4 hours. Puppy-safe: Approved for puppies from 4 weeks old, offering quick relief for young dogs. Easy administration: Small chewable tablet can be given directly or hidden in a treat—no prescription required. Compatibility: Can be combined with long-acting flea control products (e.g., Bravecto or Advantage) for immediate relief while waiting for monthly treatments to take effect.

Usage & Dosage

Select the Capstar tablet size based on weight:

  • Capstar 11.4 mg (dogs 1 – 4 kg): One tablet effective for small dogs and puppies starting at 1 kg.
  • Capstar 57 mg (dogs 4 – 22 kg): One tablet suitable for medium to large dogs up to 22 kg.
  • Capstar 114 mg (dogs 22 – 45 kg): One tablet ideal for extra-large dogs up to 45 kg.
Administer orally once—place on the back of the tongue or mix with food to ensure complete ingestion. The tablet dissolves quickly; no need to fast before or after dosing. For heavy infestations, Capstar may be given once daily for up to 3 consecutive days. Capstar does not provide residual activity; follow up with a long-acting flea preventative to maintain control.

Safety & Considerations

Capstar is generally safe and well tolerated; some dogs may experience mild, transient side effects—such as scratching, lethargy, or vomiting—following rapid flea kill. Monitor for allergic reactions if your dog has never been exposed to nitenpyram before. Capstar does not prevent new fleas from jumping on after 24 hours; combine with monthly flea preventatives. Not effective against ticks or other parasites. Keep out of reach of children and pets. If vomiting occurs within 2 hours of administration, re-dose with another tablet. Consult your veterinarian if your dog is pregnant, lactating, or has known sensitivities.
