Drontal

Brand Overview

Drontal is a broad-spectrum dewormer containing praziquantel and pyrantel embonate, targeting tapeworms, roundworms, and hookworms. Available as chewable tablets or oral suspension, Drontal provides comprehensive intestinal parasite control. Its palatable formulation ensures compliance, making it suitable for puppies from two weeks of age. Veterinarians frequently recommend Drontal for routine deworming and to manage mixed infestations commonly encountered in multi-dog households or kennels.

Key Benefits

Broad-spectrum efficacy: Treats tapeworms (Dipylidium caninum), roundworms (Toxocara canis), and hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum) in one treatment. Single-dose regimen: One dose clears most mixed infestations. Safe for puppies: Approved from two weeks of age, aiding early parasite control. High palatability: Chewable tablet or flavoured suspension ensures easy administration without force-feeding.

Usage & Dosage

Administer Drontal at a dose of 5 mg/kg praziquantel and 10 mg/kg pyrantel embonate:

  • Chewable tablet formulation: One 50 mg praziquantel + 125 mg pyrantel tablet per 10 kg of body weight.
  • Oral suspension: 1 mL per 2 kg of body weight (5 mg praziquantel + 12.5 mg pyrantel embonate per mL).
Give orally with or without food. For puppies under 10 kg, use the oral suspension to ensure accurate dosing; round up to the nearest 0.5 mL as needed. Repeat treatment every three months as part of routine deworming or more frequently in high-risk environments. Store chewable tablets in a cool, dry place; keep suspension refrigerated after opening and discard after 28 days.

Safety & Considerations

Drontal is generally well tolerated. Common, mild side effects include transient vomiting, diarrhoea, or lethargy. Do not exceed recommended dose. Use cautiously in puppies under four weeks or weighing less than 1 kg—seek veterinary advice for correct dosage. Avoid use in dogs with known hypersensitivity to praziquantel or pyrantel. Ensure accurate weight measurement before dosing. Store out of reach of children and pets. No known contraindications with other common treatments, but always consult your veterinarian if your dog is on additional medications or has pre-existing health issues.

Frequently asked questions

Can I combine Drontal with other parasite preventatives?
Yes—Drontal can be administered alongside flea, tick, or heartworm preventatives. Always follow recommended intervals and consult your vet for guidance.
How often should I deworm my adult dog?
Routine deworming every three months is recommended, or more frequently if your dog is at high risk or has recurrent infections.
Does Drontal treat whipworms?
No—Drontal does not cover whipworms. Use a combination product like Milbemax or Simparica Trio® for whipworm control.
Is Drontal safe for pregnant bitches?
Praziquantel and pyrantel embonate have good safety profiles, but consult your veterinarian before deworming pregnant or lactating dogs.
What if my dog vomits Drontal?
If vomiting occurs within 30 minutes of dosing, readminister the full dose. If after 30 minutes, no re-dose is needed; monitor parasite clearance.
