Endogard

Brand Overview

Endogard is a monthly chewable tablet containing milbemycin oxime, effective for heartworm prevention and control of roundworms and hookworms. Unlike combination products, Endogard focuses on nematodes, making it a cost-effective option for dogs already on external flea/tick control. Developed to ensure high palatability and ease of administration, Endogard is suitable for puppies from 4 weeks of age. Regular use protects dogs from heartworm infection—a potentially fatal disease transmitted by mosquitoes—and addresses common zoonotic worms.

Key Benefits

Heartworm prevention: Milbemycin oxime kills migrating Dirofilaria immitis larvae, preventing adult heartworms from developing. Broad nematode coverage: Controls roundworms (Toxocara canis) and hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum) that can affect gut health and cause anaemia. Puppy-safe: Approved from 4 weeks of age and weighing at least 1 kg. Palatable chewable: Flavour-coated tablet encourages voluntary ingestion, reducing stress associated with pill administration.

Usage & Dosage

Administer Endogard once every 30 days at a dose of 0.5 mg/kg of milbemycin oxime:

  • Endogard 1 mg (dogs 1 – 2 kg): One tablet monthly.
  • Endogard 2.5 mg (dogs 2 – 5 kg): One tablet monthly.
  • Endogard 7.5 mg (dogs 5 – 15 kg): One tablet monthly.
  • Endogard 17.5 mg (dogs 15 – 35 kg): One tablet monthly.
Offer with food to improve absorption and reduce risk of vomiting. If a dose is missed by less than one week, administer as soon as possible and resume monthly schedule. If more than one week late, conduct a heartworm test before reinitiating Endogard. Store tablets in original packaging at room temperature away from moisture.

Safety & Considerations

Endogard is generally well tolerated. Possible side effects include mild gastrointestinal upset—vomiting or soft stools—and occasional transient lethargy. Use caution in dogs with a history of seizure disorders, as milbemycin can lower the seizure threshold. Do not use in heartworm-positive dogs—treat existing infections prior to starting Endogard. Avoid concurrent use with other macrocyclic lactones unless approved by your veterinarian. Keep out of reach of children and other pets. If adverse reactions occur, discontinue use and consult a veterinarian promptly.

Frequently asked questions

Can I give Endogard with other parasite treatments?
Yes—Endogard can be used alongside flea and tick preventatives. However, avoid overlapping milbemycin-containing products to prevent overdosing.
Is Endogard effective against whipworms?
No—Endogard does not cover whipworms. For whipworm control, consider combination products like Milbemax or Simparica Trio®.
When should I start Endogard in puppies?
Begin at 4 weeks of age and 1 kg body weight. Administer monthly for continuous heartworm and nematode prevention.
What if my dog vomits the tablet?
If vomiting occurs within one hour of administration, give another full dose. If after one hour, no re-dose is needed; continue the regular schedule.
Do I need annual heartworm testing?
Yes—test annually before reinitiating Endogard to confirm your dog remains heartworm-negative.
