Moxiclear

Brand Overview

Moxiclear is a topical solution containing moxidectin, a macrocyclic lactone effective for heartworm prevention, gastrointestinal nematodes (roundworms, hookworms, whipworms), and control of certain external parasites such as mange mites. Applied monthly as a spot-on, Moxiclear offers broad-spectrum parasite control and is suitable for dogs from 6 weeks of age (weighing at least 2 kg). Its water-resistant formulation allows dogs to swim or be bathed 24 hours after application. Moxiclear is often prescribed by veterinarians for multi-parasite protection in a single, easy-to-administer product.

Key Benefits

Heartworm prevention: Moxidectin kills migrating heartworm larvae, preventing adult worm development. Broad nematode coverage: Controls roundworms (Toxocara canis), hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum), and whipworms (Trichuris vulpis). Mange mite treatment: Effective against Sarcoptes scabiei and Demodex canis when applied monthly. Convenient application: Single spot-on treats internal and external parasites; water-resistant after 24 hours for swimming or bathing.

Usage & Dosage

Select the appropriate Moxiclear pipette based on body weight:

  • Moxiclear for Small Dogs (2 – 5 kg): One 0.5 mL pipette monthly.
  • Moxiclear for Medium Dogs (5 – 10 kg): One 1.0 mL pipette monthly.
  • Moxiclear for Large Dogs (10 – 20 kg): One 2.0 mL pipette monthly.
  • Moxiclear for Extra Large Dogs (20 – 40 kg): One 4.0 mL pipette monthly.
Part the fur at the base of the neck and apply the entire content of the pipette directly to the skin. Avoid contact with the application site for at least 24 hours to allow absorption. Repeat every 30 days to ensure continuous protection. If a dose is missed by fewer than seven days, apply as soon as possible and resume the monthly schedule. If more than seven days late, perform a heartworm test before reinitiating Moxiclear. Store pipettes at room temperature in a dry place away from direct sunlight.

Safety & Considerations

Moxiclear is generally well tolerated; mild local reactions—such as skin irritation, redness, or hair loss at the application site—may occur. Rare systemic side effects include vomiting, diarrhoea, or lethargy. Moxiclear is not labelled for dogs with known MDR1 gene mutations (e.g., Collies), as moxidectin can cause neurotoxicity in susceptible breeds. Do not use on dogs weighing less than 2 kg or puppies under 6 weeks of age. Avoid applying other topical products to the same area concurrently. Pregnant and lactating bitches can be treated under veterinary supervision. Keep unused pipettes and torn packaging out of reach of children and other animals; secure disposal is required for biohazardous materials. In case of accidental ingestion by humans, wash the area thoroughly and seek medical advice.

Frequently asked questions

When can my dog swim after Moxiclear application?
Dogs can swim or be bathed 24 hours after application, as Moxiclear is water-resistant post-absorption.
Does Moxiclear treat ear mites?
No—Moxiclear is not indicated for ear mites; use a specific ear mite treatment as recommended by your veterinarian.
Can I use Moxiclear in Collies?
Use caution—collies and related breeds may carry the MDR1 mutation and are at risk for neurotoxicity; test for MDR1 prior to use.
How quickly does Moxiclear prevent heartworm?
Moxidectin begins killing migrating larvae within 24 hours; maintain monthly dosing to protect against heartworm maturation.
Is Moxiclear effective against demodectic mange?
Yes—monthly topical application can treat Demodex canis infestations; consult your vet for duration of treatment based on severity.
