ParaGard

Overview

ParaGard is a monthly chewable tablet combining milbemycin oxime and praziquantel to protect dogs from heartworm, gastrointestinal nematodes, and tapeworms. ParaGard addresses Dirofilaria immitis larvae, roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and tapeworms in a single convenient chew. Approved for puppies from six weeks of age (weighing at least 0.5 kg), ParaGard supports early-life parasite control. Its broad-spectrum efficacy makes it an excellent core preventive in regions where multiple parasites pose health risks.

Key Benefits

Heartworm prevention: Milbemycin oxime eliminates developing heartworm larvae, preventing adult worm infestation. Wide nematode coverage: Treats roundworms (Toxocara canis), hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum), and whipworms (Trichuris vulpis), which affect gut health and can be zoonotic. Tapeworm control: Praziquantel kills Dipylidium caninum and Taenia species, reducing zoonotic risk via fleas. Monthly convenience: One chew per month treats multiple internal parasites, simplifying owner compliance.

Usage & Dosage

Administer ParaGard based on body weight at a dose of 0.5 mg/kg milbemycin oxime and 5 mg/kg praziquantel:

  • 0.5 – 3 kg: One 1 mg / 10 mg chew monthly.
  • 3 – 6 kg: One 2 mg / 25 mg chew monthly.
  • 6 – 12 kg: One 5 mg / 62.5 mg chew monthly.
  • 12 – 25 kg: One 12.5 mg / 156.25 mg chew monthly.
  • 25 – 50 kg: One 25 mg / 312.5 mg chew monthly.
  • > 50 kg: Combine chews to achieve correct dosing based on total weight.
Administer with food to improve absorption and reduce gastrointestinal upset. If vomiting occurs within one hour, re-dose with another full chew. Maintain strict 30-day intervals; if dosing is delayed by more than five days, perform a heartworm test before reinitiating ParaGard. Store chews at room temperature in a sealed container.

Safety & Considerations

ParaGard is generally well tolerated; mild side effects—vomiting, diarrhoea, or lethargy—may occur transiently. Use caution in dogs with a history of seizures, as milbemycin oxime may lower the seizure threshold. Do not use in dogs under 0.5 kg or puppies younger than six weeks. Pregnant and lactating bitches can receive ParaGard under veterinary guidance. Avoid concurrent use with other macrocyclic lactones (e.g., Moxiclear) to prevent overdose. Keep tablets out of reach of children and other pets. In case of suspected overdose or adverse reaction, contact a veterinarian immediately. A yearly heartworm test is essential prior to reinitiating ParaGard prophylaxis.
