Popantel

Overview

Popantel is a monthly oral chew combining pyrantel embonate and milbemycin oxime to protect dogs from heartworm and common gastrointestinal nematodes (roundworms, hookworms). Note that Popantel does not cover whipworms or tapeworms. Approved for puppies from six weeks of age (weighing at least 1 kg), Popantel supports early parasite control. Its palatable formulation aids voluntary ingestion, making routine deworming and heartworm prevention less stressful.

Key Benefits

Heartworm prevention: Milbemycin oxime eliminates immature heartworm larvae, preventing adult heartworm disease. Nematode control: Pyrantel embonate effectively treats roundworms (Toxocara canis) and hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum), which can cause gastrointestinal distress and zoonotic transmission. Puppy-safe: Suitable for puppies from six weeks old, facilitating early protection. Once-monthly convenience: One chew per month treats heartworm and nematodes, reducing administration errors and improving compliance.

Usage & Dosage

Administer Popantel based on body weight:

  • 1 – 5 kg: One 5 mg pyrantel embonate / 0.25 mg milbemycin oxime chew monthly.
  • 5 – 10 kg: One 10 mg pyrantel embonate / 0.5 mg milbemycin oxime chew monthly.
  • 10 – 25 kg: One 25 mg pyrantel embonate / 1.25 mg milbemycin oxime chew monthly.
  • 25 – 50 kg: One 50 mg pyrantel embonate / 2.5 mg milbemycin oxime chew monthly.
  • > 50 kg: Combine chews to achieve correct dose; consult packaging for ratios.
Administer with a small amount of food to reduce gastrointestinal upset. If vomiting occurs within one hour, re-dose with another complete chew. Resume the monthly schedule thereafter. If a dose is missed by more than seven days, perform a heartworm test before restarting. Store Popantel chews at room temperature in a secure location away from light.

Safety & Considerations

Popantel is generally well tolerated; mild side effects—such as vomiting, diarrhoea, or lethargy—are uncommon and usually transient. Avoid using in dogs with a history of seizures, as milbemycin oxime may lower the seizure threshold. Do not use in dogs under 1 kg or puppies younger than six weeks. Popantel does not treat whipworms or tapeworms—consider additional dewormers (e.g., Milbemax) if these parasites are a concern. Pregnant and lactating bitches can receive Popantel under veterinary advice. Keep chews out of reach of children and other animals. In case of an overdose or severe reaction, contact a veterinarian immediately. Annual heartworm testing is mandatory prior to reinitiating Popantel each year.

Frequently asked questions

Does Popantel treat tapeworms?
No—Popantel does not cover tapeworms. Use a praziquantel-based product (e.g., Cazitel) for tapeworm control.
How often should I deworm with Popantel?
Administer once monthly as part of a year-round preventive regimen against heartworm and nematodes; test for heartworm annually.
Can I give Popantel with food?
Yes—offering with a small amount of food may help reduce the chance of gastrointestinal upset but is not strictly necessary.
What if my dog vomits Popantel?
If vomiting occurs within one hour, administer a replacement chew. If after one hour, no replacement is required; resume the regular schedule.
Is Popantel safe for puppies?
Yes—approved for puppies from six weeks old and weighing at least 1 kg. Follow weight-based dosing carefully.
