Valuheart

Overview

Valuheart is a generic chewable tablet containing ivermectin designed to prevent heartworm disease in dogs. Administered once a month, Valuheart targets immature Dirofilaria immitis larvae before they mature into adult heartworms. Approved for puppies from six weeks of age (weighing at least 2 kg), Valuheart is palatable and cost-effective, making it an accessible option for owners concerned about heartworm in endemic areas. While Valuheart focuses solely on heartworm prevention, additional dewormers and ectoparasite preventatives should be used concurrently.

Key Benefits

Heartworm prevention: Ivermectin in Valuheart eliminates migrating heartworm larvae, significantly reducing the risk of adult heartworm disease. Once-monthly convenience: A single chew per month helps maintain consistent protection. Puppy-safe: Suitable for puppies from six weeks old, facilitating early initiation of heartworm prophylaxis. Palatable chew: Beef-flavoured tablet promotes voluntary ingestion, simplifying administration.

Usage & Dosage

Select the correct Valuheart chew based on weight:

  • 2 – 4 kg: One 68 mcg ivermectin chew monthly.
  • 4 – 10 kg: One 136 mcg ivermectin chew monthly.
  • 10 – 20 kg: One 272 mcg ivermectin chew monthly.
  • 20 – 40 kg: One 544 mcg ivermectin chew monthly.
  • > 40 kg: Use two 272 mcg chews to achieve the correct dose.
Administer with or without food. If a chew is vomited within one hour of administration, give another full chew. Resume the regular 30-day schedule thereafter. Mark the calendar or set a reminder to avoid missing doses. Store Valuheart chews at room temperature away from moisture and direct sunlight.

Safety & Considerations

Valuheart is generally well tolerated; mild side effects—such as transient vomiting, diarrhoea, or lethargy—may occur. Caution is advised in dogs with a history of seizures, as ivermectin can lower the seizure threshold in predisposed breeds (e.g., Collies). Do not use in puppies under six weeks of age or dogs under 2 kg. Pregnant and lactating bitches may receive Valuheart under veterinary supervision. An annual heartworm test is required before initiating or continuing Valuheart each year. Additional products are needed for protection against intestinal worms and external parasites. Keep chews out of reach of children and other animals. In the event of overdose or severe reactions, seek immediate veterinary care.

Frequently asked questions

How soon does Valuheart start protecting against heartworm?
Ivermectin in Valuheart kills heartworm larvae within 24 hours; monthly dosing maintains continuous protection.
Can I give Valuheart with food?
Yes—Valuheart can be administered with or without food. Offering with a meal may reduce gastrointestinal upset.
What if my dog vomits the chew?
If vomiting occurs within one hour, administer a replacement chew. If after one hour, no replacement is needed; resume monthly dosing.
