NexGard Spectra

Overview

NexGard Spectra is an all-in-one chewable tablet combining afoxolaner (to kill fleas and ticks) with milbemycin oxime (to prevent heartworm and treat common intestinal worms). Administered once a month, it protects dogs from fleas, ticks, heartworm, roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms. Approved for puppies from 8 weeks of age (weighing at least 2 kg), NexGard Spectra simplifies parasite prevention by addressing both external and internal threats in a single, palatable chew.

Key Benefits

Rapid flea and tick kill: Afoxolaner begins killing fleas within 8 hours and ticks within 12 hours, reducing itchy bites and limiting disease risk. Broad-spectrum worm control: Milbemycin oxime eliminates heartworm larvae before they mature and treats roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms—common zoonotic parasites. One chew, multiple protections: Combining external and internal parasite prevention in one monthly dose enhances compliance and reduces handling stress. Puppy-safe: Suitable from 8 weeks of age, enabling early life protection.

Usage & Dosage

Select the correct NexGard Spectra chew based on body weight:

  • 2 – 4 kg: One 11.3 mg afoxolaner + 0.5 mg milbemycin oxime chew monthly.
  • 4 – 10 kg: One 28.3 mg afoxolaner + 1.25 mg milbemycin oxime chew monthly.
  • 10 – 25 kg: One 68 mg afoxolaner + 3 mg milbemycin oxime chew monthly.
  • 25 – 50 kg: One 136 mg afoxolaner + 6 mg milbemycin oxime chew monthly.
  • > 50 kg: Use two 68 mg + 3 mg chews to achieve an appropriate dose.
Administer with or without food—offer directly or hide in a treat. If vomiting occurs within 1 hour, re-dose with another full chew. Resume the 30-day schedule thereafter. Store chews at room temperature in a cool, dry place.

Safety & Considerations

NexGard Spectra is generally well tolerated. Mild side effects—such as vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy, or decreased appetite—are uncommon and transient. Use with caution in dogs with a history of seizures, as isoxazolines can lower the seizure threshold. Do not use in puppies under 8 weeks or dogs under 2 kg. Pregnant or lactating bitches should only receive NexGard Spectra under veterinary guidance. Perform an annual heartworm test before starting prophylaxis. Keep chews out of reach of children and other animals. In the event of overdose or severe reaction, contact a veterinarian immediately.
