HeartGard Plus

Brand Overview

HeartGard Plus is an oral heartworm preventative containing ivermectin and pyrantel pamoate. Ivermectin prevents heartworm disease by killing microfilariae and larvae, while pyrantel eliminates roundworms and hookworms. Administered once a month, HeartGard Plus is palatable and easy to give as a chewable tablet. Approved for dogs from 6 weeks of age, HeartGard Plus is recommended by veterinarians in areas where heartworm is endemic and is often combined with topical flea/tick control for comprehensive parasite protection.

Key Benefits

Heartworm prevention: Ivermectin effectively kills migrating Dirofilaria immitis larvae, preventing adult heartworms from developing. Nematode control: Pyrantel pamoate treats and controls roundworms (Toxocara canis) and hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum), common zoonotic parasites. Monthly convenience: One chewable tablet covers both heartworm and intestinal nematode prevention, simplifying the parasite control regimen. High palatability: Bacon-flavoured chew encourages voluntary ingestion, reducing stress during administration.

Usage & Dosage

Administer HeartGard Plus at a dose of 6 mcg/kg ivermectin and 5 mg/kg pyrantel pamoate:

  • HeartGard Plus 68 mcg/57 mg (2 – 4 kg): One chew monthly.
  • HeartGard Plus 136 mcg/114 mg (4 – 10 kg): One chew monthly.
  • HeartGard Plus 272 mcg/228 mg (10 – 20 kg): One chew monthly.
  • HeartGard Plus 544 mcg/456 mg (20 – 40 kg): One chew monthly.
  • HeartGard Plus 816 mcg/685 mg (40 – 60 kg): One chew monthly.
Give with or without food. If a dose is missed by less than one week, administer as soon as possible and resume the monthly schedule. If more than one week late, conduct a heartworm test before reinitiating HeartGard Plus. Store chews in a cool, dry place to maintain potency.

Safety & Considerations

HeartGard Plus is generally safe; mild side effects such as vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy, or salivation may occur. Use caution in dogs with predisposing factors for ivermectin sensitivity (e.g., Collies, Australian Shepherds) due to MDR1 gene mutations; genetic testing may be advised before use. Avoid use in puppies under 6 weeks or weighing less than 2 kg. Pregnant and lactating bitches can be safely treated. If a dog vomits within two hours of administration, re-dose with another full chew. Keep out of reach of children and animals. Consult your veterinarian if unsure about use in multi-pet households or if your dog has pre-existing conditions.
