Cats play a huge and important role in inspiring great authors, who have had an affinity with cats, with some of our most cherished written works composed with cats present. To give you an idea here are some famous authors and their links to cats.
Great poets inspired by cats
Gothic poet and author Edgar Allen Poe drew inspiration from his cat “Catarina”. The dark but loving Poe wrote the poem Black Cat despite the fact Catarina was a tortoise shell colour. As Poe went through the pain of his wife dying Catarina was there as s source of comfort, often snuggling up to his ailing wife to keep her warm.
Charles Dickens the author of brooding Victorian classics such as a Christmas Carol and Oliver Twist had a love of cats. The authors cat Willamena gave birth to a litter of kittens that Dickens did not wish to keep, but as so often happens he fell in love with a female kitten that he named Masters Cat. As Dickens wrote, Masters Cat would be by his side, snuffing out the candle for attention.
Horace Walpole's famous ode to a cat
Horace Walpole also owned a tortoise shell cat that went by the name Selima. Sadly Selima suffered a freak death by drowning in a goldfish bowl and Walpole was devastated. Seeing how distraught his friend was, poet Thomas Gray penned the hilariously titled Death of a Favourite Cat Drowned in a Tub of Gold Fishes.
Sir Walter Scott is famed as a dog lover but he also owned a tomcat called Hinse who was a brave little fellow who gave as good as he got. Hinse was feared by Scott’s large dogs, but unfortunately and rather ironically Hinse was eventually killed by a dog.
