Cat Friendly Homes

Cats have high standards in their living habits and a good home is something our feline friends always want and deserve. With a reputation as being quite upper class, cats are easier to please than you may think. This article I have been reading, making an ideal home for your cat, offers some advice about how to make the best home for your moggy.

Some of the basic things you can do will give your cat its dream home and will not change your own dream home too much from how you like it. Meaning you and your feline companion can live together happy in your surroundings.

Why cats love high spots

My cat is an outdoorsy fellow, who loves to be in the rough and tumble of the elements and he will often go out all night and get up to his nocturnal tasks. However when it rains he is kept indoors and in these situations, he can be seen sitting on the window ledge staring at the outside world. He would do this so much that he eventually went to his window viewing station even when it was sunny as it was a place he could see his beloved outside world but have the safety and comfort of home.

My cat is not unique in loving the outdoors, and most cats love to get fresh air in their lungs. A window lookout in your home is the next best thing and also adds no extra cost or design to your interior; you simply need a window ledge. Make sure there is nothing that will damage or that is valuable on the ledge or your pet will surely knock it off.

On an instinctive level your cat loves to see its surroundings because it gives it confidence in the area and lets it feel safe from harm. Tops of cupboards are a favourite of cats, and my cat loves the top of the fridge freezer, and wherever it is safe and possible cats should be encouraged to have these safe spots in your home.

Cat hideouts

Taking the notion of the top of the cupboard safe zone a step further is the totally bespoke kitty hiding place. Sometimes cats like to get away from it all and many will find a location within their territory (your house) where it can relax in total safety. Before your cat chooses your wardrobe and destroys your clothes you could create a hideout for it. Places such as under the stairs, and behind furniture offer great places that are cosy for your pet. However, make sure you too have access to this location in case of an emergency.

Cat toys and distractions

If you want to avoid damage to your prized rug, or the new leather sofa you bought then certain distractions are a must. A scratch post will allow your cat to scratch away without a mark on your possessions and they come in a variety of styles and sizes, while a comfy rug in front of a fire is a favourite of cats.
