A deficiency of L-lysine can only be corrected by supplementation, since it cannot be synthesized by animals.
Supplementing with L-lysine has been shown to reduce the symptoms of FHV-1 in cats and kittens.
Twenty-one percent of cats in an Australian study tested positive for FHV-1.
There have been several reports published on the supplementation of L-lysine in cats and kittens:
In cats with conjunctivitis caused by FHV-1, oral administration of 500 mg L-lysine twice daily was well-tolerated and led to less severe symptoms than placebo treatment.
Taking 250 mg of L-lysine twice a day reduced viral shedding. Despite the lack of controlled studies, it is believed that this dose of L-lysine reduces chronic and recurrent symptoms of FHV-1.
In the treatment of symptoms of FHV-1, 500 mg of L-lysine orally every 12 hours is recommended.
