Heartworm disease, caused by Dirofilaria immitis, can be fatal if left untreated. Mosquitoes transmit immature heartworms that mature in a dog's heart and pulmonary arteries, leading to coughing, reduced exercise tolerance, and congestive heart failure. Treatment is costly, invasive, and carries risks of severe side effects. Preventing heartworm infection is far safer and more economical. Even indoor dogs are at risk—mosquitoes can enter homes through open windows. Annual testing and consistent prophylaxis are critical components of responsible canine healthcare.
We offer several vet-recommended heartworm preventatives, including Advocate, NexGard Spectra, and Simparica Trio. Advocate® spot-on treatment provides monthly heartworm prevention along with control of fleas and intestinal worms. NexGard Spectra® chewables combine monthly flea and tick control with heartworm prevention and broad-spectrum worming (including roundworms and hookworms). Simparica Trio® also delivers comprehensive monthly protection against heartworm, fleas, ticks, and intestinal parasites. Each product is palatable, easy to administer, and has a proven safety profile when used according to instructions.
Choose a product that fits your dog's lifestyle, size, and tolerance. Puppies (from 8 weeks) weighing at least 2 kg can start on chewables like NexGard Spectra® or Simparica Trio®. Advocate® spot-on is suitable from 7 weeks old and 1 kg body weight. For multi-parasite protection, Simparica Trio® or NexGard Spectra® may be most convenient, reducing the number of separate treatments required. Always test for existing heartworm infection before starting a preventer—administering prevention to an infected dog can cause serious reactions. Consult your veterinarian for an annual antigen test and follow label instructions meticulously.
Administer chewables with or without food at the recommended dose based on weight. For Advocate® spot-on, apply monthly to the skin at the base of the neck, avoiding contact with water for 48 hours. Keep a calendar reminder for dosing dates and schedule annual veterinary check-ups and heartworm tests to confirm negative status. Even with prevention, watch for signs such as fatigue, persistent coughing, or difficulty breathing, and seek veterinary care immediately if symptoms arise. Store heartworm preventatives out of reach of children and pets to prevent accidental ingestion.
